The immediate problem of the brotherhoods of Gloria de Sevilla

The brotherhoods of glory face these days with uncertainty. The Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that is deriving from this virus affects society and therefore the world of the brotherhoods. But, if in any case we must put the focus on some of these specific groups, they are in the sacramental and glories corporations.

The suspension of their processions, which presumably will not take place at least and hopefully, until after the summer, adds the difficulty to continue developing their activities that these days focus on charity and assistance to those in need. On the other hand, with the complete delivery of the money from the chairs in the air, which for these brotherhoods is the majority of their annual budget; its economic stability is faltering in the face of its imminent day to day.

The delegate of Glorias del Consejo, Hugo Gentil Carmona, points out to this media that these brotherhoods have an "important dependence" on said subsidy. In response to requests for the return of chairs by some subscribers before a Holy Week that has had no processions, the Council has called all the older brothers for this purpose on May 26 in the courtyard of the Montería del Alcázar.

And it is that "the economic situation of these brotherhoods begins to be complicated," says Gentil. "There are brotherhoods that will not have, with total security, the extra income from the May crosses or from the Velá de Santa Ana itself," as in the case of the Triana corporations. As an example, Gentil, who was the older brother of the Pastor of Triana, points out the losses that this corporation will assume without the big party in the Triana neighborhood that is framed in the summer calendar: "15,000 euros."

This is just one example, since "there are many brotherhoods that are very bad and that, with their ballots and raffles that they make taking advantage of the exit, usually get something positive in their budget", this year will not happen in most of them.

Similarly, within its limitations, the Glories continue to redouble efforts in charity, although "they are very limited."

Suspending your outings

The departures planned after Easter, after the suspension of the presentation of the poster, the proclamation and the transfer of the Virgin of Montemayor to the Cathedral, have fallen like cards on the table. Every week news of brotherhoods arrive that will not come out and this uncertain panorama carries over to July, with the virgins of Carmen, who hope to make a final decision in June. Gentil points out that the departure of these summer brotherhoods "is looming complicated", because "processions cannot yet be held on the street" and the outlook in July is "quite uncertain." For this reason, it sets a date as a key for the Council of Brotherhoods: August 15: "What may come later will be very determined with the decision made in the Cathedral regarding the departure of the Virgen de los Reyes."

This fact is extrapolated to the world of foremen and costaleros who "find it very difficult" to organize again in the near future: "There are foremen who are not clear about it," says Gentil.
