One hundred years after the death of Joselito el Gallo, the great patron of La Macarena

May 16, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of what is considered "The King of Bullfighting." Joselito el Gallo changed the way of understanding bullfighting and, with his patronage, he was a supporter of the artistic style that would fully reach Andalusian Easter thanks to Rodríguez Ojeda with his devotion, Esperanza Macarena, as the main emitting focus.

Just a hundred years ago, the bull "Bailaor" took his life, with only twenty-five springs, in the bullring of Talavera de la Reina, raising the myth that still remains, twenty years later. But, its popular impulse was also reflected in a brotherhood of the Macarena that was experiencing the rise of regionalism, the arts and customs of the time.

José Gómez Ortega was the promoter and great benefactor, along with Juan Manuel Rodríguez Ojeda, of the enrichment of the artistic heritage of the early morning brotherhood in the first decades of the 20th century. He owes one of the most iconic jewels of the Virgen de la Esperanza, the "ladybugs", which Gallito acquired in Paris and gave to the image of his devotion. Thanks to these incentives, Easter in Spain gained a style of creation that was imitated throughout the national territory.

His relationship with Ojeda, the great creator of contemporary Easter thanks to the revolution applied in the San Gil corporation, earned him to promote all the projects that Ojeda had in mind as the great patron of Macarena.

And it is that Gallito would not be understood without Macarena and Macarena would not be understood without Gallito. An indissoluble story that culminated in that May 1920 with the Virgin of Hope dressed in mourning for her death, leaving an indelible and universal stamp for the history of the city.

Fifteen days later, on May 31, 1920, Esperanza Macarena wore the most shocking mourning remembered in a painful one in the entire history of the city. Mourning the death of a bullfighter who left a ring on this day like today, 100 years ago.

Gallito's acts in the air

But also the coronavirus has become the protagonist in this centenary. the acts programmed by the Macarena brotherhood fall like cards on the table with the social distancing imposed in this pandemic.

The corporation created for 2020 a series of acts related to this fundamental event to understand the last century of this brotherhood: talks, exhibitions, the premiere of Abel Moreno's march and events, some suspended and others in the air, that have torpedoed this awaited year Joselito who hopes, at least, to inaugurate in November the monument in front of the Basilica de la Macarena.
