Almonte celebrates the procession of the Virgen del Rocío de Reina with a "contained festival"

The Virgen del Rocío should have walked yesterday, with her queen's finery, the streets of Almonte. The almonteños had to carry it on their shoulders in a procession that, in the words of the president of the Mother Brotherhood, Santiago Padilla, "has a bittersweet taste because you wait seven years." But it could not be.

The parade becomes “the moment in which the Virgin blesses the streets, families gather with friends, it is quite a ritual of joy but, at the same time, of sorrow because it means that the game is already on the countdown , which would be a week away. " In fact, next Sunday the Transfer to El Rocío de la Patrona would have taken place and only a few numbers would be left out of the calendar for the Pentecost pilgrimage.

But the coronavirus pandemic has stopped time in Almonte. That the White Dove did not slide yesterday through the center of her town receiving cheers under a rain of petals and shotgun salutes did not detract from the day's intensity and emotion. "They go inside and are on the surface," Padilla confessed to this newspaper.

The town hall itself expressed on social networks that “it is the 17th of May that we least imagined. A cluster of nerves, nostalgia, comfort, and many other feelings are mixed inside us. But we should not be sad. The hope that comes from its light will compensate for what we lack today: the procession of the Virgen del Rocío, Patroness of Almonte ”.

To celebrate the “contained festival” of the procession Sunday, the Matrix decorated the Almonte parish in an “unusual” way: the facade woke up with a life-size reproduction of Our Lady of Rocío at the door of the church, which attracted up to the temple to numerous faithful, respectful of social distance but who did not miss the opportunity to be as close as possible to their Mother.

At 12:00 the bells of a temple rang that opens daily but closes its doors every weekend to avoid crowds.

The ephemeral cathedral in the square stood out against the leaden sky. But the facades and balconies were full of color. Neighbors decorated their houses to express the meaning of a historic day, that "we wait seven years and that circumstances compel us to live it differently," says the brotherhood president.

The hangings made for this special Rocío de Luz, the white garlands of paper flowers and the pots were combined on the balcony with shawls, gypsy costumes, and even guitars, enea chairs, tambourines and tambourines.

And the ornaments were not limited to the houses of the processional route that could not be, but many others were adorned in this special Rocío de Luz in which there was also a memory for Miguel Ángel and María Domínguez, murdered on April 27, 2013 at his home on Avenida de los Reyes, a heinous crime that also just turned seven years old.

"The Virgin is the light for the rocieros in this darkness that we are going through," remarks Santiago Padilla. Not a year has he held the reins of the presidency of the Brotherhood. “This is a scenario that we would never have imagined and that I do not want anyone, because it is difficult: we are writing a story that was not written. Everything we are doing is absolutely new, we have no references. ”

The effort is twofold, because "the economy of the brotherhood is also suffering and because for an assembly like the one that has been done in the parish of Almonte, you cannot count on 15 or 20 people, but it must be a small number that they keep security measures as possible ”, as with the rest of the activities planned and adapted to the health emergency.

Padilla shows, however, his satisfaction "when verifying how the people of Almonte, the rocieros, are understanding all these unwanted measures", which have no other purpose than to protect people's health.

The positive side of the situation is that the Patron Saint stays until next year ”in Almonte. "That the Virgin be with us is always a reason for hope and tranquility, for consolation." Padilla sends the message that "all rocieros must be more united than ever with our brotherhoods."
